How Do We Fix it: Derate the Hate

I was honored to be interviewed with my co-author Beth Malow on two recent podcasts about our upcoming book Beyond the Politics of Contempt: Practical Steps to Build Positive Relationships in Divided Times.

“How Do We Fix It” podcast host Richard Davies is a media trainer who works with clients to strengthen their public speaking, messaging, and interview skills. Our podcast (https://www.howdowefixit.me/new-blog-3/malow-teschner) built on what we’ve learned as bridge builders and Braver Angels volunteers.

The interview included imagining a country where people of opposing political beliefs and different social, geographical, and educational backgrounds get along.  We've always had debate and disagreement, I said. The concern now is that this has become so personalized: if you don't agree with me that means you're stupid or evil. People should disagree, but when it's all about "us versus them,” this is dangerous for our country.

The “Derate the Hate” podcast is produced by Wilk Wilkinson who conducted our interview (https://deratethehate.com/episodes/beyond-the-politics-of-contempt-dth-episode-266-with-doug-teschner-and-beth-malow). We offered a hopeful message and practical ways we can each play a part in mending our fractured communities.

Ironically, the title of the second podcast offers an answer to the title of the first. In these divided times, people are looking for something better; stepping back for some serious self-reflection is a key to bettering our lives and country. If we are going to find a way to fix what ails our nation, it has to start with how we each think and feel about others, especially those who have different ideas and beliefs than ours.

We each have an extraordinary opportunity to make a difference in people’s lives, including our own. Don’t underestimate your impact!
